Ho Chi Minh Airport Transportation

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is located about 6–7 km north of central Ho Chi Minh City, making it one of the closest major international airports to its city centre in Southeast Asia. Because of this short distance, the journey to downtown usually takes 20–40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Passengers have several transport options available, including buses, taxis, ride-hailing services, and car rentals.
Buses and Shuttle Services
Public buses are the cheapest way to travel between the airport and the city. Several routes connect the airport with major districts, tourist areas, and transport hubs.
Location
Bus stops are located outside both Terminal 1 (Domestic) and Terminal 2 (International) arrivals areas.
Popular routes
- Bus 109 – Airport to District 1 (Ben Thanh Market area)
- Bus 152 – Airport to Ben Thanh Bus Station
- Bus 49 (shuttle) – Airport to major hotels in District 1
Typical prices
- Public buses: about 5,000–20,000 VND ($0.20–$1)
- Shuttle bus 49: about 40,000 VND ($1.5–$2)
Typical destinations
- Ben Thanh Market
- Pham Ngu Lao backpacker area
- District 1 hotels
Bus 109 is one of the most convenient services for visitors because it has air-conditioning and luggage space.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing (VTC)
Taxis are one of the most popular ways to reach downtown Ho Chi Minh City due to the short distance from the airport.
Location
Official taxi stands are located directly outside the arrivals halls of both terminals.
Popular companies
- Mai Linh Taxi
- Vinasun Taxi
- Grab (ride-hailing app)
Typical price
- Downtown (District 1): about 120,000–200,000 VND ($5–$8)
Typical travel time
- Around 20–30 minutes in normal traffic
Using Grab via mobile app is often the easiest option because the price is fixed in advance and avoids negotiation.
Metro / Train / Tram
Ho Chi Minh City is currently developing its first metro system, which will significantly improve connections between the airport and the city in the future.
The Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien) is the first line planned for the city, although it does not directly serve the airport yet. Future metro expansions are expected to connect the airport to the network.
Until the metro reaches the airport, taxis, buses, and ride-hailing services remain the most practical options.
Car Rental
Car rental is available at the airport, although it is less common for tourists to drive themselves due to heavy traffic and unfamiliar driving conditions.
Location
Rental services can be found inside the terminals or arranged through hotels and travel agencies.
Typical vehicle options
- Economy cars
- Sedans
- SUVs
Typical prices
- About $40–$80 per day, depending on vehicle type.
In Vietnam, it is common to rent a car with a driver, which can make traveling more comfortable.
